It’s almost Fall, y’all! We’ve had an incredible month at Abode, and there’s still more to come.
Upcoming Event - Writers’ Family Reunion, Houston TX, 10/28
We are so thrilled to be a part of our first in person event! There will be panels, workshops, and more. If you see us, come say hi!
Chapbook Submissions - Open until 11/30
At Abode, we’re interested in work that discusses identity, origin, and culture. Send us your prose, poetry, and everything in between. For poetry, send up to 30 pages. For prose and hybrid, send up to 60 pages.
Abode not only prioritizes marginalized voices but is also run by marginalized writers and editors. We understand how important it is to level the playing field. Submission fees are on a sliding scale with options ranging from $5 to $20. Fee waivers for queer/trans writers of color are available!
More details about submissions and our author package can be found here. We’ve already loved reading submissions from the last month, and can’t wait to read more!
Workshops
At Abode, we believe offering affordable workshops is important so all writers can have access to writing tools and community engagement. All of our workshops are virtual and are offered on a sliding scale, starting at $10.
Join us this week for Storytelling with the Tarot with Prose Reader Tenacity Plys, Wednesday September 20th at 7pm CST.
Tarot reader and author Tenacity Plys will walk students through the narrative significance of the tarot by way of Jungian archetypes. The class culminates in a personalized reading for each student, which will then be used as a writing prompt!
On Sunday October 8th from 1-3pm CST, Sofía Aguilar will be leading Para la Cultura: A Generative Open Genre Workshop
Where do you or your family come from? What traditions bring you together? What do you wish others knew? In this two-hour generative writing workshop with Sofía Aguilar, attendees will learn how to identify and use strategies to use writing as a vehicle for exploring culture and cultural identity.
Learn about Prose Poems with Ariana Brown Saturday December 9 from from 12-1:30pm CST
A supportive virtual class centered on the poetry of veteran slam poet, Suzi Q. Smith. Together, we will explore the building blocks of prose poems and sentences to create dynamic poems with attitude.
Our first workshop, Writing Queer & Trans Joy, was a joy itself! More than 15 writers came together to discuss and celebrate the radical nature of joy. Thank you thank you thank you to everyone who rang in the workshop season with us! Our Substack Enthusiast is grateful for la comunidad. Check out this gorgeous poem Lae Astra wrote in the session over on Bluesky!
