Fall Press Updates: Pre-Orders, Submissions, & Events!
Check out what we have in store this fall!
Fall weather is (somewhat) reaching Texas this week, and we have tons of exciting updates and events coming up!
Moth and Ghost at Work by Stephen Rendon, out November 1st
Pre-orders are officially open for our next chapbook, Moth and Ghost at Work by Stephen Rendon!
Stephen Rendon's Moth and Ghost at Work is as engaging as it is inventive. Touching on themes of the self, class, Seguin, family, and race, this hybrid chapbook contains the entire human experience. Through Rendon's innovative experimentation, we're given a tender, intimate look at what it means to live and breathe in modern capitalism. By the time you're reading this, the world will look a little different-whether it's for the better or worse, as Rendon poignantly reminds, is up to us.
We’re so excited to release our first hybrid title! Copies will ship as soon as November 1st.
Chapbook Submissions - open until November 30th
Our second reading period ends in just over a month! Send us your prose, poetry, and everything in between. For poetry, send up to 30 pages. For prose and hybrid, send up to 60 pages.
This year, we are also asking for a brief artist statement so we can get to know the artist behind the book. You can learn more about our press values here.
Abode not only prioritizes marginalized voices but is also run by marginalized writers and editors. We understand how important it is to level the playing field. Submission fees are on a sliding scale with options ranging from $5 to $20. Fee waivers for queer/trans writers of color are available!
Our full guidelines can be found here.
Know somebody whose work aligns with Abode? Let them know we’re ready to read their words!
Intersectional Latinidad Poetry Workshop - San Marcos Public Library, November 2nd, 12-2pm
Co-led by Founder & Director Diamond Braxton and Senior Poetry Editor SG Huerta, this workshop will focus on what it means when our Latinidad intersects with other parts of ourselves, such as queerness, Black identity, mixed-race identity, feminism, transness, disability, activism, and class, and how to welcome all parts of ourselves in our writing. We look beyond ourselves and connect to the ancestors who share our intersections, welcome them into the space, and write alongside them. This workshop will be grounded by the new Latino Poetry anthology, and participants will generate new work. Seats are limited, so be sure to register soon!
Open-Genre Writing Workshop: Becoming Humanimal - November 17th, 5-7pm CT
Next up in Abode’s workshop series is Becoming Humanimal led by Si-Min Chong! This virtual workshop is offered on a sliding scale starting at $10.
In this online class, we will read works examining the ways animals, trees, mushrooms, the living beings around us make a home (art), gather food (sustenance), and experiment with ways of being and play. The class will begin with a close reading from writers exploring this theme, followed by writing prompts. We will take inspiration from our kin and experiment with methods such as free-writing, phonetic translations of birdsong, writing next to a tree/plant, or a body/glass of water, and more. In the spirit of conjuring and collaborating with our kin, we will write or make work by way of prose poetry or lyrical prose, sketches, concrete poetry, or simply, marks on a page. This class is open to writers of all genres who are curious about writing alongside other humanimals.
