The day is finally here! Abode Press is officially open for our second chapbook reading period. Check out what we have going on this month:
Chapbook Submissions - open until 11/30/24
At Abode, we’re interested in work that discusses identity, origin, culture, and of course your abode or home. Send us your prose, poetry, and everything in between. For poetry, send up to 30 pages. For prose and hybrid, send up to 60 pages.
This year, we are also asking for a brief artist statement so we can get to know the artist behind the book.
Abode not only prioritizes marginalized voices but is also run by marginalized writers and editors. We understand how important it is to level the playing field. Submission fees are on a sliding scale with options ranging from $5 to $20. Fee waivers for queer/trans writers of color are available!
We are also excited to share that we will be increasing our author advance from $75 to $200. More details about submissions and our author package can be found here. We can’t wait to dive into your manuscript!
Workshops
At Abode, we love offering affordable workshops so all writers can have access to writing tools and community engagement. All of our workshops are virtual and are offered on a sliding scale, starting at $10.
Join us TONIGHT for Writing Our Identity Through Pop: Poems and Pop Music with Asela Lee Kemper, Thursday August 15th, 6-7:30pm CT.
A virtual class where we look into works by Barbara Jane Reyes, Brenda Shaughnessy, and Rosebud Ben-Oni on using pop music to explore themes of grief and identity through poetry. We will be listening to various songs from the pop genre while writing poems based on the music we listen to during class. We will have time to share our work.
Bookstore
We have three wonderful chapbooks available for purchase, and more to come soon!
Thank you to everyone who joined us to celebrate the book launch for Coral in the Diaspora by Jerrice J. Baptiste earlier this month. Coral in the Diaspora is our first fiction chapbook, and we have less than 10 copies left!
Earlier this year, we published two poetry chapbooks, My Sisters Look Like God: A Womanist Manifesto of Poetry by Desiree McCray, and Quererme en La Luz by Farrah Fang, both available in our store. These books are the perfect addition to your Sealey Challenge schedule!
